One Piece had me struggling to hold back tears many a time, but it's not a -sad- anime.
AIR is, as many people have said before me, and Grave of the Fireflies was devastating to me as well.
Millenium Actress(film) is a sad, brilliantly made film. the Kenshin OVAS (also known as Samurai X) were sad too. i'd list more but i'm trying not to mistake "sad anime" for "depressing anime" *_*.

in that case you should start looking up japanese and korean dramas. they affect me more than any anime ever has. that shit is a cure for your break-down needs.

Also .. 5 Centimeters per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days. Two extremely gorgeous and terribly sad movies.

I fully agree on grave of the fireflies and air (the ova and series are equally depressing...) gurren laggan is depressing on the 7th or 8th episode,.......if you have seen it you should know why. and the ending to wolfs rain MY GOD not nearlyu as bad as air or fireflies but the last 4ep or so of that show, killed me.

Mm, yeah, Wolf's Rain is a pretty intense one. Just leaves with you a feeling of ".......... fawk" when you finish it.

The ending of Gundam Seed was incredibly sad. I cried.
I suggest finding it somewhere, it's a pretty good series.
