Does Grave of the Fireflies count? I've not seen it but I've heard it's realy sad. And yeah I would recommend Elfen Lied if you're okay with gore and nudity |

I really recommend watching Kimi ga Nomozu Eien. It's based off a graphic novel. It's a few years old, but it is very depressing. I can't even explain how it starts because it would already be a spoiler!
If you manage to get past the first episode, I have a gut feeling that you would be hooked. It's fairly short too, I believe it is about 14 eps.

Voices of a Distant Star.
Full on misty-eyes. If it had literally gone on for 20 more seconds, it would of been full on tears.
Parts of Kanon have been sad...which just reminds me that I need to finish watching that. >_>;;
