anime i watched probably went in this order in elementary school to the beginning of jr highschool:
Pokemon Digimon Cardcaptors Evangelion Escaflowne Trigun Cowboy Bebop
I didn't really get into pokemon until i started playing on the gameboy. I remember the whole pokemon vs digimon arguments as a kid but digimon really stood out as a great show with an involving storyline, whereas pokemon the animated series was made so that it could go on forever (and is). i loved digimon seasons 1 and 2, but couldn't really get into three because i loved the characters from the previous seasons too much. Cardcaptors was really fun to watch, and had a lot of fresh original ideas that i really got into.
i didn't have cable so i never grew up watching shows like tenchi, gundam or dbz. i remember watching escaflowne on FOX (i think it was fox), and loved it until they canceled the series. that's when i finally moved out of what was just shown on network tv and started buying escaflowne on dvd. and of course, when i went to pick up escaflowne from the rack, there were a plethora of awesome looking covers for a bunch of shows i didn't know existed--and i suppose that was the start of my avid anime watching.
my first headfirst dive into non-network anime was evangelion, which is on my top five anime to this day. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, etc are all classics of course, and i think they all hold up pretty well.

I hope this brings back memories to all those who watched Toonami long ago.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBDbeK1igc&feature=relatedContains pretty much all the animes I started and grew up with. Edit: I must add when I first saw Cowboy Bebop I was shocked at the very first scene with the old men, the one guy saying "son of a bitch". I remember thinking "Oh my god they said bitch on TV!?" and that just amazed me.

I especially like that they used the narrator from Outlaw Start for most of him, because that voice is as amazing as Tony Jay's.

Hmm probably the earliest that I've seen was DBZ, Cardcaptors came about a few years later when it debuted on Kids WB.

Pokemon - The reason why every person should arrive at home within 30 minutes after school. Digimon - Also awesome stuff. Gundam Wing - I had no idea what's going on. All I cared was that "DUDE, A GUY WITH A MASK THAT COVERS HIS EYES - THAT'S AWESOME!!!11OENONE" Cardcaptors - Sad thing - it wasn't on any of the channels part of the basic cable package. I only saw some of it after a relative gave us a shared satellite account.
And then the more recent ones: Ghost in the Shell - first time I watched it was on TV. Since it came on so late at night, I was basically unaware of most of the things going on, and it was pretty trippy like that. Second time was watching it online, which is when I'm not half-awake, and I actually am paying attention to the plot. Robin the Witch Hunter - being the show that's next to Ghost in the Shell Gundam Seed and GSD I also watched some of the English dub Naruto, but I just didn't happen to get hooked onto it.

Mostly Dragonball, original Transformers which sort of counts, and all of the shit direct import dubs from Japan that I got in Italy growing up, the names of which I don't remember. Then growing up stateside, all of the typical Toonami stuff people have already mentioned.
