With all the recent games coming out today and how hyped they are, you hear so many good things and the like and when you finally play games you end up being severely disappointed, example Deadspace not being as scary as it was supposedly going to be. Do you think are the most common overlyhyped game mechanics/promises and what games do you think are guilty of this?

Do you think that Mirror's Edge and Left 4 Dead's sales will be hindered by the Fallout 3 and Fable 2 craze?
David from California, by the way.

Name: Tom L Location: Canada
Regarding: Recently in the news, a kid that lives near me ran away from home because his parents took away his 360, he's been missing for weeks and everyones really worried. Microsoft donated $25,000 to the reward for information and is looking into his XBL interactions to find clues of where he could be.
Question: Do you think the media is to quick to use video games as a scapegoat to avoid the main issue that parents need to manage their children's use of technology in general to avoid becoming dependent or addicted. Or do you think that Video games are more of an issue when it comes to kids becoming addicted and causing trouble?

Long-time franchises have changed. For the most part they have progressed with major improvements when it comes to controls and graphics, but alot of what has defined these titles over the years has been either changed or entirely removed. Now developers choose to follow trends they see in mainstream popularity.
Looking at resident evil 4 and 5, they've stripped away all the classic re monsters, placed more action oriented gameplay, and softened the fear inducing aspects of the series in order to attract a wider audience. But, even though the game is so radically different from past re titles, they still title it resident evil, even when the game itself is so different it can be justified as a new ip.
Developers are being cautious of putting up new ip's, so in relation to that they completely revamp their own established franchises to attract new audiences, but deceive long time followers into buying that certain game they've always admired by retaining the original title.
Gameplay wise, most of these games may still be enjoyable regardless of the changes. But even though I support re's new control scheme, the game still lacks the original characteristics that they were once celebrated for in the first place.
If i wanted to play an action game, i would go play an action game and if i wanted to play a horror game, i would want to play a horror game. Genres lack definition to them when the title no longer subjects itself to being categorized by one term. Bending genres seems to be the only way to capture a mass audience, but in return games are losing the basic foundations that captured the original fanbase. And in turn, the subject itself loses it's identity.
Many gaming franchises are guilty of taking on this path, but with the rise in development costs, its understandable that developers must take this risk.
But is it really good in the long-run? What do you guys at 4pp think?
Will established video game franchises still maintain their distinctive identities, or will the line between different genres become so blurred that we soon won't be able to distinguish resident evil from gears of war.
