Recently Iv been noticing a lot of talk about PSP and DS games going download only. Recenlty for example... www.gamespot.com/news/6212505.html?tag=latestheadlines;title;3Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? Just announced its going to be download only on PSN. Patapon 2 was also download only. One major plus point of this is well, the cheaper price. Due to the fact they don't have to print box art or manuals or discs they save money, keeping a $30 to $40 game down to just $20. Now my question to you guys is. With the DSi out and the PSP Go on its way out. Both companies seem to be pushing downloadable more. Do you think this is going to be the method portables will adopt and stick with? Do you think it will last? More importantly how would you feel if you didn't have a physical copy of your game? Share your thoughts... comment. Etc. Ill start. Personally, Id love for all games on portables to be download only. That's what makes a portable, well a portable. You loose portability if you have to carry 10 game cases around. Or a big honker case for your w/e and maybe 2 or so games. But do I see physical copies going "extinct"? Not for a long time. For a lot of people who don't have credit cards, don't fret... you can still pick up a PSN card in stores.

I go for downloadable games, - it saves the trouble of carrying UMDs around. - quick loading - UMD's take away battery power.

Downloadable games are a great idea for portables. It conserves space when traveling and allows you to always have access to your library of games, still it always feels good to have an actual physical copy in your hands when you buy it. Nothing beats that feeling right now, but I wouldn't mind if games went download only. It would just take some time to get used to.

I'm just going to go with everybody else and say, It's not "Portable" when you are carrying 10 UMD's. The only thing I see a problem is being Memory, but that is easily solved.

I would much prefer download only's, but some crazy part of me really likes having physical copies of things, so meh, I dunno.

Its odd. Logically I can see downloadble content being the next big step with little to no downsides in all categories since VHS to DVD. It saves carrying around hard copies, saves loading and battery times, it even saves on resources like plastic, paper and even packaging and transport since it's all done over the net. Yet, despite ALL of that, I still have an urge to support disc's or cartridges. Being at the point where we're so lazy that we don't even want to pop in a new game or to carry them around is frightening in a way.
I would also say 'what about HDD space or file corruption?' but for hard copies that would basically translate into 'what about pocket space and losing the fuckers the old fasion way?'. I think it's a nostalgic thing. That or I probably suffer from a fear of everything going to be downloadable and transactable over the internet leaves us open to disaster if it's all lost or destroyed. The closest I can describe this is the Skynet Disorder. I just want it to be known that when we start going crazy due to the lack of music and being able to make purchases since we've lost the concept of real money, I f*cking called it.

First off Thanks for the replies everyone. Cosmic I see where your going with that. But personally, its not the factor of me being lazy... its just the annoyance of carrying them all around. Regardless of the case or not, you still have to worry about loosing the disc or it getting scratched. At least if you get downloadables, they are tied to your account. So you are basically free to download whenever you want to play again. If you loose the disc, its gone, you gotta buy it again. Harddrive space, well lets see. Let me put it this way. The PSP Go will have a 16GB internal harddrive, and a micro sd slot. You can always delete and re-download games. Corruption on the other hand is a more realistic issue... But honestly I doubt its anything we are really going to run into majorly.

for portable systems, it makes sense. i mean the only flaw with it is if the device is stolen or lsot, then you don't even have your games anymore cause they were all on it as well.

Modded PSPs have good homebrew applications. Possibilities with PSP Go! will make it better

With modern file systems and hard drives, corruption of the entire file system is highly unlikely.
Also, zekana, you can re-download a game unlimited amounts of times onto a certain amount of consoles (depending on the platform). So theft of the device won't matter outside of you have to buy another console. Plus the licensing to that device can be remotely disabled.
I personally would prefer DD for portable games. I find I play my DSi more because I don't have to carry around so many games. It isn't laziness, I just prefer to have it all in my pocket and having to carry around games along with the device makes the portability decrease.
