Top 5 Video Game Twists (possible spoilers)

So, what are your top five favourite twists in video game history?

I'll post my top five later when I can figure out the order.

5. FFX - Tidus is a dream and Auron's actually dead 0.o. Those two revelations changed the entire experience for me, particularly Auron's. It explained some of his behaviors and when you play through the game a second time you notice little things such as how he wouldn't enter the place in Guadosalam with all the pyreflies.

4. Castlevania Symphony of the Night- You gotta fighter Richter Belmont, just...woah, and if you do things right. You discover the inverted castle, a whole other castle to explore. Not sure about most people but this was a huge twist to me, particularly trying to beat 200% of the game.

3. Star Wars Kotor 2 - Kreia is actually Darth Traya, I've probably written about this before, but seeing her just quickly take down those Jedi Masters you have been trying so hard to find quickly places her on the awesome villians list. Particularly when you have a conversation with her later on and she explains her motives for everything she has done.

2. Star Wars Kotor 1 - Taris gets blown up, You are Darth Revan. These two twists really helped place the game on my top games I've ever played. First there is the beautiful urban landscape Taris..the place you spend the first few hours in, you spend time here learning of the planet's background and not-so pretty undercity. Then bam, Malak decides to fire his lazer. In addition, the discovery later in the game that you are indeed Darth Revan was a total mindfuck.

And my Number one Videogame Twist of all time.


1. Metal Gear Solid 3- The boss did everything she did for Snake. This twist, and this game made me cry like a little girl lol. Just thinking on why the boss looked so miserable all the time, and hearing Eva thoroughly explain every step of the boss' defection could bring a tear to anyone who was paying even a bit of attention to the storyline.

5. System Shock 2: Throughout most of the game, you're being led by a woman named Dr. Janice Polito through the incredibly fubar'd ship of the Von Braun. When you finally meet her, you find out that Dr. Janice Polito has been dead for some time, and that you're actually being led by the AI SHODAN.

4. BioShock: There are several twists in only a few minutes at this spiritual successor to SS 2. You are Andrew Ryan's son, the phrase "Would you kindly..." has been used to control you this entire game, and the one person who's been leading you through the game, Atlas, is in reality Frank Fontaine, the notorious gangster of Rapture.

3. Resident Evil 1: Albert Wesker, S.T.A.R.S. Commanding Officer, accompanied you on a mission to the mansion in the Arklay Mountains. In truth, he lured you there in order to gather data on the effectiveness of the T-Virus. Why? Because he is a member of Umbrella (you find this out during the slide show).

2. Final Fantasy 8: Edea, the sorceress that SeeD has been sent to eliminate (I'm surprised I still remember all of this), is in fact your matron of an orphanage that you (Squall) and EVERYONE else completely forgot about.

1. Metal Gear Solid 1: The two twists for this game left me saying "HO SHIT" for a good while afterwards. Fox-HOUND could never get the DARPA chief's code, and thus really didn't have a nuclear launch threat. They continued to play it up until Snake, unknowingly, activated the launch (inevitably, the launch of Metal Gear). Who led him to this (the second twist)? Well, lets just let this conversation do the talking.

Campbell: Snake, that's not Master Miller!
Miller: Campell! You're too late!
Campbell: Master Miller's body was just discovered at his home. He's been dead for at least 3 days! I didn't know because my Codec link with Master was cut off. But Mei Ling said his transmission signal, was coming from INSIDE THE BASE!
Snake: So who is it?
Campbell: Snake...you've been talking to...
Miller: Me...Dear Brother *takes off his sunglasses and reveals himself to be Liquid*
Snake: Liquid! How the--
Liquid: You served your purpose. You...may die now.

5. Mortal Kombat II - Mileena is Kitana's evil Tarkatan-hybrid clone created by Shang Tsung; ordered to do so by Shao Kahn.

4. System Shock 2 - SHODON makes herself known and reveals that she was posing as Dr. Polito.

3. Silent Hill 2 - James smothered his wife, Mary, so he could carry on his life without the burden of looking after her.

2. Final Fantasy X - Tidus is a "dream of the fayth" and will disappear when Sin is defeated once and for all.

1. Bioshock - Jack is Ryan's genetically modified son and was being manipulated by Fontaine/Atlas. Would you kindly...?

3. Fallout 3 - The Enclave is still around, and President Eden is a computer.

2. Silent Hill 2 - James smothered his very ill wife Mary so that he wouldn't have to deal with with her frequent outbursts of rage, and so he could live his own life.

1. Bioshock - All of the game's events has been fueled by the fact that the main character responds to the phrase: "Would you kindly...?" And carries out whatever orders follow, because he was brainwashed when he was a child. Atlas is also a lying jerk, and is Frank Fontaine. Andrew Ryan is also your father. (Loads of twists there. My mouth was open for all of them. xD)

All of the Metal Gear Solid series have a twist.

Spoiler alert: I think the Prototype twist was pretty clever. The whole "Alex Mercer is dead and the virus absorbed his body" and "The specialist was only using you to further his rank into the Black Watch".

5. metal gear solid 2: i know,i might get killed for that. but i liked the twist in mgs 2 the most. i mean, it were like 3 twists in a row. that was one big mindf*ck!

2. castlevania: sotn: the inverted castle, and the dark priest of funk shaft, just blew my mind.

1. monkey island 2: at the end, it turns out, that guybrush was just fantasising about the whole pirate thing and lechuck was his brother chuckie. or was did he got cursed, by lechuck. great ending, great twist.

Street Fighter IV (Joke, but I had to add this.) Gouken never died. Akuma knocked him out for SO LONG, everyone assumed he died. Greatest retcon ever?

Splinter Cell series - Sams's daughter's death was not just not looking both ways when crossing the street. It was a murder. Second greatest retcon ever?
