Who ya gonna call! My buddies so I can stop using the AI to play this game.
Now there are a few things I'm gonna say before I start this review:
I have NOT seen the Ghostbusters movies. I have not seen them at all yet and wish I had. Yes I have lived a sad childhood, blah blah blah.
This review is from someone who is completely NEW to the Ghostbusters. So I feel like I can be less biased towards someone who has seen the movies and may Love or hate the franchise.
Ahem*
The game starts you off in a very interesting style. It shows the ghostbusters through a commercial in a museum, which later holds an important key to the storyline. Soon it gets to our heroes, and our "character". Our character pulls what I call the "Link/Gordon" style. Totally silent and letting other characters do the talking for him. However, there is more humor since we can see his face. So during cutscenes when we see our guy, it gets some good reactions to see his face.
The game play is a little confusing at first. Granted I'm playing on a TV that is not a flatscreen or in any means, HD. But I have a good feel for what's going on. Basic functions like for most shooters seem to be common practice. RT for shooting your Photon beam, yada yada yada. Certain moves become complicated when you receive certain upgrades for your weapon.
the trigger above the left trigger goes automatically to the regular Photon...so you if you slip instead of hitting LT and you hit the button that switches, You will be cursing up a shitstorm.
Now, the boss fights are pretty easy. In the beginning.
The AI seem to do their job as support and sit there, letting you do all the work. I think they did that as to show the Ghostbusters trying to "train" you, the newbie. However when you have to go and stop beating the boss cause your buddies gets knocked down, it gets to be annoying.
There is a part that both Stranger and I are completely STUCK at. You are only given Ray as support and it is, let's be honest, a COMPLETE cluster fuck.
I get that the creators were trying to challenge you as you went along...but when my system and screen lags because you have so much stuff going on, then that's a problem.
Now, this is where you're gonna laugh. This game scared me at some parts. Ok, done laughing? Good. Now I know what you're thinking, "How can Ghostbusters be scary?!" believe me, it can.
What Ghostbusters does that many good Survival Horror games do is not show us scary images, (The ghosts in Ghostbusters are more of a joke than a nightmare) but give you the atmosphere that something might, or might not happen. You ever walk down an alleyway at night and get chills down your spine? That's the feeling I got playing Ghostbusters. Some stuff really made me jump and honestly, I was sitting there for a good moment wondering how many angry parents would come to our store demanding a refund for the nightmares their kids were having.
Now onto technical things:
I'm not a 3rd person view fan. None at all. Aiming is a bit awkward, especially when you have to be very quick with your shots and aim but have to be able to dodge at the same time while making sure your companions aren't hurt. It's...annoying.
Graphics look extremely well done. Granted, I've never been one for graphics and normally I think if Graphics are better than a story, there is a MAJOR problem. But in this case, the graphics looked very nice.
Lighting was a problem for me, (Due to the lack of HD tv) but sometimes I couldn't see stuff because of the shadows and etc. But the goggles help since you see in a "night vision" kind of deal.
Synching: Oh god. The voice synch for this was a bit off. There wasn't even a Japanese version to translate from so Idk why that was off.
Overall. I like it. Granted I am glad I didn't have to spend a good $65.24 (that's my state's tax added) to get the game.
Here's my score:
(0-10)
Story: 9
Graphics: 8
Music:8
Controls:6
Gameplay:5.8
Boss Fights/QTE Fights: 4 (for being either way too easy or way too hard)
Humor: 10
Overall: 7.5
RENT BEFORE BUY.
