Windows Vista SP1 shouldn't cause any harm to a hard drive. At all.
What I'm guessing happened was that either your harddrive just needed a good reformat, or that it died because it was old.
In any case, if it is indeed dead, all you need to do is install Windows on the new drive, update, and there ya go. Of course, I would suggest going to get a copy of XP, because it is superior, but that's just me.

It's only 2 years old? It shouldn't be dying like that. Then again, Dell is kind of a terrible company.
I take it that you know how to reformat and reinstall Windows, right? You should have tried that before saying the hard drive was bad. My computer just recently had Boot Blues, and all it took was a reinstall of Windows to fix it. If the hard drive were the issue, your computer wouldn't even know to blue screen. It would sit at the BIOS screen going, "wat."
All that aside, if Vista's Service Packs cause this again, I would suggest contacting Microsoft support.

The freezing may be normal; Windows appears to freeze during a lot of processes such as Disk Checker. However, if you leave it sitting there for a little while, it may move on.
Like I said, though, contacting Microsoft seems like the best option at this point, as I am not experienced with automatic updates or Vista.
