Hello, good folks of the QA forum. I had a question to pose to anyone with PS3/disc reading knowledge.
I recently bought a Japanese made disk drive for the PS3. It's one of the 60GB models, so it does have the engine on it that can read PS2/PS1 games. What I'm curious about, however, is how discs are read by the PS3. Can a North American made PS3 case/motherboard read a NTSC-J region locked PS2/PS1 game? Is it that laser that reads discs, or the hard disk drive?
Any sort of help would be appreciated with this. Thanks guys. <3

As in Japanese HDD? Then the answer is sadly no. To my knowledge, the HDD is just storage, and it is the player itself that does all that lovely region locking. Plus, newer models of the PS3 won't even play PS1/2 games. This was not due to a simple HDD change but a removal of certain hardware within the PS3.

Harddrives are only storage. They don't read games.
The laser that reads discs, however, doesn't read and play games that are on the HDD. The files are read by the PS3's firmware (or OS, if you will), and then are used accordingly.
And to my knowledge, the PS3 isn't region locked.

More specifically, PS3 games are region free. Blu-ray movies, on the other hand, are still region-locked on the PS3 (NA shares the same code as East Asia so I really don't mind).

I was more referring to PS2 and earlier games. But yeah, it's the laser, so. Oh well, I got an extra HDD for a dollar, whee. Thanks guys.
