In Advent Rising you play as Gideon Wyeth, a member of one of the last human outposts in the galaxy. You start out in a small outpost in orbit around the planet Edumea. The game is very epic and cinematic, full of explosions and a constant stream of enemies. As Gideon Wyeth, you are ready to take down any creature that threatens you, and the survival of humanity.
Presentation
After the first cutscene my mouth was literally agape. Flying a small cruiser amidst hundreds of other spacecrafts was the best presentation of any game I have ever played. No joke, this game has a true blockbuster-feeling to it, and it adds for a lot of flavor. Some of the different environments are so different, vast, and beautiful, that you’ll definitely feel like you are in the middle of a movie.
Story
As you start the game you are arriving at one of the last human outposts, getting ready to go on a mission to pilot the shuttle that will carry the diplomats facilitating first contact between the aliens and humans. Shortly after, you are told that a group of aliens bent on destroying humanity, the Seekers, will come to Edumea and destroy it. The overall story was created by Donald and Jeremy Mustard but, the dialogue and screenplay was written by Orson Scott Card. Most of the terminology has been carried from Ender's Game, including the terms; "vids", "Buggers", and "ansible".
Gameplay
The game is very entertaining when it comes to the shootouts and melee combat, eventually he learns that he has secret powers and this only adds to the fun. He has the ability to lift objects and enemies, slow down time, create shields of energy, etc. Also, an interesting point is the game is the flick targeting allowing you to aim at two enemies at the same time. There are tons of explosions in this game and when I say tons I really mean a whole damn lot. There are some vehicles that you can commandeer in the game also although they rarely appear the time you use them is enjoyable. The only problem is that the camera controls very awkwardly when you first start the game. It will take some time getting used to.
Graphics
Visually, Advent Rising is very disappointing. A large portion of the character models look bland and plastic like. Most of the key animations like jumping and diving appear to be broken. The framerate is also annoying when surrounded by hordes of enemies by hordes I mean over twelve enemies on screen. The lighting and shadows appear as glitchy messes when they do appear. But, the environments are very well designed for some reason and they make up for all the glitchy messes. If you actually pay attention to what you are doing you won't even notice the glitches.
Sound
I absolutely love the music in this game. The voice dialoging is done well with no significant voice talents in the cast, and seems perfectly fine. Advent Rising has Dolby Digital support so if you have a nice HQ speaker system (damn you) you will hear some pretty good stuff
.The Verdict

This is a very good game that has garnered alot of dislike since people say it's identical to Halo. They obviously haven't played it because the only thing that looks like it's from Halo is the Spectre. But, I recommend this game it's fun and addicting an excellent story by Orson Scott Card and it's 9.95 used.
