Stubbs the Zombie is a game where you, yourself, play as a zombie. You start out in the town of Punchbowl, Pennsylvania, in a retro/futuristic time. The game is full of countless brain eating, causing chaos upon the town before you, and laying waste to the human victims. Your objectives compose of mainly turning the town red. As a zombie, you're more than ready to dominate the town, one brain at a time.
Story: As you first start out in the game, you rise from the grave, only aware of the objectives to go to point A from point B. The game isn't necessarily clear on why Stubbs must go to said places, or why he rises from his grave at this, of all times. However, the storyline does pick up near the very end, as you discover Stubb's motives as he completes his objectives. The little twist at the very end of the game is admiring, showing the player what Stubbs had desired all along. While the story could be improved with in-depth detail, it suits the game well-enough to keep the player's attention for the rest of the game. The game does include some very humorous writing in some cutscenes, keeping players interest maintained throughout the game.

Gameplay: Now this is where the game really picks up. Moving as a zombie for the first few minutes may sound a little worrisome, being that the ideal zombie is a slow moving, vulnerable target by itself. But fret not, Stubbs is much more than that. Stubbs has the abilities to eat brains, control hordes of his zombie fellows, and use his body parts as destructible weapons against the living. Stubbs can throw his liver as a grenade, exploding humans and turning them into zombies in the process. Use his fart to stun enemies, allowing him to attack humans and eat brains easily. Throw his head as a bowling ball, and detonate at humans. And my personal favorite, throwing his hand over a living human's head, and control their actions to turn against other. Weapons range from laser pistols to rocket launchers to snipers. Vehicles range from hovervehicles to controlling tanks. Using these special abilities is a necessity as the game progressively becomes difficult. Being undead doesn't necessarily mean you're invulnerable to anything. You'll take damage from weapons and melee attacks, but health can be regenerated through eating brains and waiting in a secure spot to allow the health to regenerate by itself.
During the first few missions, the objectives are rather straight forward and feels like a walk in the park, as you could easily just consume one brain after another. Hehehe easy, right? Hahahah. WRONG. The AI is rather well done in the game, as they will begin to carry more destructive weapons, and vehicles, so strategy becomes a necessary factor. This is where those special abilities come in handy, to take out each living human one by one. The bosses of the game are no push-over. On normal mode, they have take me sometimes more than a couple times to figure out their attack patterns, and the timing of each attack. The objectives feel rather repetitive at times, yet the devs did manage to add in an entertaining Simon-Says-like Dance level. I felt so entertained by eating brains, and controlling legions of zombies by my side, I never got the feeling of "This is getting too boring. When will this ever end?". All that went through my mind was "Die, you damned sheep of society! Your zombie survival books can't save you now!". It is truly, a wonderful feeling.
Graphics: Graphics are rather decent for an xbox title. The character models look a little blocky and disjointed as you won't exactly see lips moving on par with dialogue or facial expressions, kinda loses touch with the player and the characters. There are some details well worked on, such as seeing the green rotten skin of Stubbs, or the guts spilling out of his stomach. The environments aren't exactly eye-catching as the game progresses. You'll often run into bland environments of desolate streets or vacant lots. It's not a major issue, but it would be nice to know the developers had added a lot more details into the game. Among the details I admire about the game, is the spills of blood you'll be leaving all over the ground, as brains are consumed, and the many body parts that will be lying around.
Sound: This is one of the main highlights of game, music-wise. Many of the songs you'll hear in the game are a fantastic re-vamp of 50s songs such as "Mr.Sandman", recreated for your pleasure. The music will keep your toes tapping, and makes you feel like being in a party. In a whole brain-eating fiesta sorta way. The music doesn't occur very often in the game, which is a shame, because it seems much of the effort for making the music, was re-creating these songs.
The sound effects are pretty solid, as you'll hear that brain crunching sound each time a bite is taken out of a head. The moans of zombies beside you, will fill you with joy as you gather your zombie friends. Gun sounds are just what they are, nothing too special, but sounding how they should sound.
Overall, this is a fantastic game, and should not be missed. It's a shame this was hidden under the covers of other Xbox titles which have received too much recognition *cough*Halo*cough*. On the xbox live marketplace, it's $15. May seem a bit much for even an old title, but it's well worth your money. You might be able to get it for around less than 10 bucks on amazon, which is quite the steal. The game is also available for PC as well, along with a demo some place on the internet.
Scores:
Story:7.5
Gameplay: 8.5
Graphics: 7
Sound: 8.5
I recommend zombie-fans to buy this game, at whatever price you can find. If not, give it a rental at least, it just may turn your interest.
