hello all to my "Gems of Last Gen!!!!" review number 1. today, i will be going over 1 of my favorite games of all time, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System.
well, lets begin.
also note. i go by a rating system that many are not familiar with, or atleast it seems that way. i will never give 0's. if it was made, it deserves a 1 right off the bat. i go with 1-5.
1 is crappy. not worth your time
2 is ok. it may not appeal to some but its ok. rent if that.
3 average. doesn't do a whole lot right but doesn;t do a whole lot wrong. its ok. rent
4 very good game. just some things keep it from greatness. defenent rent or buy
5 its an amazing game. you should get it.
Story:
You, Glitch, are found by a team of soldier while out on patrol. they carry you back to their secret base where they fix you up. after that, your treated to a memory update if you will, where you are treated with a quite humorous cold war style film where you learn of an evil robot named General Corrosive who is the most dangerous robot ever created. the planet your own itself is an industrial planet where ore and metal are highly valuable. mostly barren wasteland. After that, the base is attacked and you volunteer to fight the good fight. you fight your way through the armies and well, i weren't spoil anything for you.
in terms of overall story, its pretty good and enjoyable. the cutscenes are fun to watch and theres a sense of enjoyment just listening in on your enemies when they haven't spotted you just to hear anything interesting.
overall, 4/5 for story. not the best out there but defently caries you through the whole experience with a twist here and there to liven it all up.
gameplay:
well, the game is a third person shooter through and through. the shooting is top notch as it should be and everything feels good. you have a melee attack though it is pretty useless.
you start off with a simple mining lazer though it can be upgraded as time goes on. you get other guns and grenades as well. a corrine charge is your standard grenade and your best friend at clearing away enemies. later on you find a gun called the ripper which cuts down tethers as well as cuts the wires in enemies, disarming them in a sense. you find the standard fair as well. machine gun (S.P.E.W.), rifle (Rivet gun), shotgun (scatter blaster), flame thrower (toaster), etc., but you find some that are unique. you get the emp grenade that shuts down enemies and messes with your sights if your not careful, the creaner with a fitting name. it can lock on to enemies and rain down missiles of joyous explosions apon them. even a grenade that reprograms the AI to be on your team (lots of fun) but the prime and joy of the game is truely the Control Teather. with this, you can take control of your enemies as much as you like though believe me, its not as easy as you think to do.
there are vehical sections you come across in the game. the first is a mining hover car. you can use its machine gun to take out your foes or you can grab on to them with "GIANT CLAW OF DOOM!!!". there is another vehical called the Rat. this is a 6 wheeled off road vehicle that is used to cross long distances. there is a mounted turret on top, great for fending off waves of baddies that may come your way. now the controls are odd at first but you will get used to them.
there are 2 robots you come across throughout the game where you can buy weapons and upgrades for them or for yourself. think black market. but how do you purchase said upgrades? washers. enemies sometimes drop washers, the ingame currency. the more you collect, the better stuff you can buy so collect them all, or as many as you can get.
all the weapons feel very balanced and non seem over powering. you can beat everything with just the mining lazer or even the melee if you truely wanted to. all in all, very fun and very challenging even if your on easy mode. brad himself has said hed rather play it on easy if he is on the feed. ive gotten past hard mode myself and it is tough.
overall, 5/5 very fun and fast paced. very fun and enjoyable enemies to kill and giant mechs galore.
Multiplay:
yes, there is multiplayer. its is quite fun for what it is. there is no online play. you have your typical death match and what not. on a sad note for some, there are golden secret chips found throughout the levels of the game. you must find them in order to unlock the multiplayer levels. just a warning if you wanted multiplayer right off the bat.
overall, 3/5 enjoyable though i never cared for it much.
graphic/artstyle:
this game originally came out in 2003 but at the time, on a graphical stand point, it looked amazing and still holds up well on the gamecube and xbox versions. ps2 not so much.
the artstyle is metallic, dry, unmoving, uninhabitable, and inorganic. it fits the world very well. water makes an appearance but only as a reminder of the harm it causes to machines.
overall, 4/5 very good look that suits the game.
Voice Acting:
Should voice acting really get its own section? seriously, I'm asking you, should it?
anyway, the voice work in the game is very top notch. the voice for each character feel like they belong with their personality and bring a fresh light into everything. glitch's voice itself breath a nice normal guy becomes hero type of voice when he speaks.
overall, 5/5 it is very good and suits the game well.
final thought and overall score for the game:
well, like said, the game came out in 03. it still looks good but for many, they may not be able to go back to it. it is a fun and enjoyable 3rd person shooter and i consider it the best 3rd person shooter of last gen (excluding pc) with over 40 levels with all having a unique setting, i can gladly say that anyone who hasn't should pick this game up. i do recommend the gamecube or the xbox versions however. the ps2 one did not fair too well sadly.
FINAL VERDICT:
Story: 4/5
gameplay: 5/5
Multiplay: 3/5
Graphics: 4/5
VA work: 5/5
overall
score: 4.5/5
