Whiplash Review
Whiplash is a piece of art that seems to have been forgotten about over the past few years. But it remains to be one of the greatest games I have ever played. Whiplash is a standard plat former that was released for Playstation 2 and Xbox. In this game you play as Spanx (A weasel) and Redmond (A rabbit) who’s aim in the game is to escape from an evil animal testing corporation.
Gameplay:
Although Redmond (the rabbit) and Spanx (the weasel) are two animals chained together, the gameplay is much like any other platformer. The player controls only Spanx, using Redmond as a weapon or tool as the situation requires. Spanx has most standard platforming abilities, while Redmond is completely indestructible as a result of tests conducted upon him and so can be hurled into security guards, jammed into machinery, and used as a grappling hook, among other uses. Redmond can be inserted into special outlets to be set on fire, frozen, or become radioactive. One unique aspect of the game is that many objects through the levels are breakable and are assigned a dollar amount which is tracked by the game; by completing the game with more than $6 million in damage, special content can be unlocked.
Audio:
The music for whiplash was composed by Kurlt Harland The great thing about the music is that it responds to the players inputs, for example the bigger the combo of hits, the louder the music becomes. Amongst that there are a series of voiceovers through out the game which can be extremely funny. Redmond unlike Spanx can speak. He has a very witty sense of humor and can be at times hilarious. The dialogue is perfectly written giving Redmond the potential to be one of your favorite characters of all time.
Graphics:
The graphics are totally unique to any other game. The artwork it stunning, the scenery is amazing and the characters although simplistic is very well thought out and distinctive. The level design is fantastic and really gives it a 50’s edge to it. The characters are very large and melodramatic and their movements are very large and often humorous. When scientists run around in circles with their hands above their heads is a great sight for a teenage boy.
Reviews and Press:
The reviews for Whiplash were quite mixed. Game Informer gave Whiplash a 4 out of 10, saying "It’s simply so boring..." My Gamer 7 out of 10, as did IGN. IGN commented, "I'd recommend renting this game and bringing it back as soon as it gets old."Gamepro gave Whiplash a 4.5 out of 5 and added "Whiplash really is a hell of a game. With a little more polish before release, this game could have been a true masterpiece.
