Joy of joys! An adventure following a clay man chasing the evil lord that stole the life force of another clay man, paralysing him.... And you get help from your gallant friend/pest Willy... And... You eat stuff?
This game is awesome.
The Neverhood for PC is a 1996 Point-and-Click Adventure game, all set in Claymation. You follow the silent and often hilarious Klaymen (Pronounced "Clay-Man") as you solve horrifically addictive and satisfying puzzles and amaze yourself with the charm of the music composition and leave yourself in histerics whilst marveling at Klaymen's little habits and funny animations. I'll go through my regular routine.
Graphics and Level Design
It's nice to critisize this game's graphics because it saves me typing. Everything is beautiful and creative and runs pretty smoothly, and the change from the norm in terms of looks gives some really nice treats for the eyes. All the sections of the game have their own sense of originality, so you'll never see the same looking place. All the buildings and natural objects look fantastically obsurd and fun, and there's an amazing contrast of simple models and absolute masterpieces in the backround when you stop and stare over The Neverhood. All of this plays over positively to the puzzle elements in the game, too, which sometimes requires some good memory and occasional backtracking. This game is pretty much open world, but the world is rather small and doesn't need exploring as the story takes you everywhere you'll want to go... Trust me.
Gameplay.
It's a Point-and-Click, with the perspective usually to the side of Klaymen as he wanders. When you leave a building you'll change to a first-person view to ease walking around the open environments. The game is all puzzles and exploration, there's no combat whatsoever, and the puzzles are broken up sometimes by an occasional cutscene, so nothing really gets tedious. I warn you though, this game takes a lot of common sense and genuine thinking, you will NEVER get through this game by trial and error. If you're not into that sort of thing, this probably isn't your game.
Audio.
I cannot describe with words how amazing the audio is in this game. It is definitely the best music I've ever heard in any game, and some of the best I've heard outside of gaming. The music is quirky and playful, and will get you singing along (If you call is singing, you'll see what I mean) and you won't be able to stop your feet from tapping. In the first-person exploration segments, a creepy, daunting sound plays... It stays with you for a bit, and definitely freaked me out when I played. It really gives you the feeling of loneliness when playing this game, which will make sense in a bit.
Story.
This game is nice because every single puzzle you solve affects either the story or another puzzle later that will then affect the story. for instance. (SPOILER) At the very beginning, in your house, there are five rings attached to strings on the wall. Two you need, but I won't go into the first one. One of the rings you have to pull makes a bell noise which is the same noise that comes out of a room with a radio in it about 3 quarters into the game. Without pulling that one ring, there is no way of accessing the last quarter of the game. Also, the bell noise is the only indication for it. I know, it puts you in a puzzle you weren't even aware of. The overall plot I won't go into, but in the whole world there are only four characters. You, Willy, Hoborg (The frozen king) and Klogg (The evil dude). All of these characters are interesting and genuinely funny, and the plot is so tounge-in-cheek, it's trully incredible.
I cannot recomend this game enough to anyone. It is definetely my favourite game of all time, and I think it will easily become one of the favourites of any gamer who is willing to put some true thought into playing The Neverhood. All I can say is try it. The only problem with it is its' rarity, I had to pick it up from ebay for about 60$, but I think you can get it from other sites, just don't go looking in stores. I hope you love this game as much as I did. 10/10, there's no other game like this, and that alone should catch anyone's attention.
