About 12 years ago I entered an arcade. Not because I really meant to, and certainly not because I was looking for a specific game to play. In face, I really didn't like 'games' at that time.
Sports? I was bad at them all. From football to soccer, not only was I completely incapable of doing them...I just felt I was pushed too hard. And to be frank, people didn't accept me either. Especially jocks and stuck up cheerleaders, the whole lot of them I wished to burn in a giant bonfire. Board Games? I liked Clue, but everything else bored me to death, except the occasional 'tic tac toe' or 'Monopoly'.
The problem was clear: Even though I could be a millionaire in monopoly...I was just moving a little piece of plastic to become one. There wasn't much interactivity.
SO when I went into the arcade, I definitely expected something fun. And boy did I get it. I remember the first thing I played was a Star Wars light saber game, where you were basically a light saber kicking the crap out of an arsenal of droids, and...if you got to the end...duel good ol Vader.
I played this game because...well...I was hooked to it. Not because someone told me it would be good, and not because everyone was playing it. The fact of the matter was, I just stumbled across it.

So what's happening now? Well we're living in a world where we know about all the popular games coming out. All of the sequels, head-bashing fps's, diverse RPG's....but just the ones we will recognize right off the bat.
Many years later after the arcade days for me, I found Jak and Daxter at a game store. And, well, if you know me from the chat or from past posts...you know I adore that game. Again, not because I heard about it, and not because everyone was playing it.
Sure, even when a game is highly publicised it can still be good...but are we missing other truly creative games because we have a system that is telling us what's good and what's not?
Now, I'm not saying you can't tell the difference, but what games do you see on those game commercials on G4?
Gears of War 2
Resident Evil 5
Grand Theft Auto 4
Halo Wars
Soul Caliber 4
Killzone 2
Fable 2
Final Fantasy 13.....13!!!!!
Look, that's only 8 games. And they all are sequels or spin-offs. So, where are the completely new games?
-When you go to gaming stores, do you have you're heart on one game...or do you go there to explore for ones you don't even know?
-Are game companies brave enough to discard their series (I'm looking at you, Nintendo and Mario) , and venture out into a new one? Just ask Square Enix. They know all about that problem.
So what are your thoughts on games today? Is hype just trying to tell us what to get and what not to get? Are developers becoming afraid of making new games because of what WE think?
And that's another question...how do we affect future games?
I hope to hear some constructive, yet interesting opinions
