I couldn't fit the whole title in the topic so I'll rephrase it.
What fighting game do you guys think is more challenging, competitive, and just overall better: Tekken, Street Fighter, Soul Calibur, or Virtual Fighter?
With Street Fighter IV coming out tomorrow, Tekken 6 coming out this fall, and Soul Calibur recently being released a couple of months ago, there is a lot of new competition going around in the fighting community.
I personally like Tekken more (of course, I am being a bit bias) because it was the first fighting game I played and I was mesmerized at how badly I got beaten in it by my cousin. I wanted to get better in it. The characters were plentiful to choose from and they were interesting. Each person had their own unique fighting style and it seemed balance (any character can beat any other character with skill). The combos in the game are exciting and enticing. Plus it was just fun playing it in the arcade (when arcades were actually fun to go to). Tekken is just the fighting game more suited for me.
What are your guys take on it? If there is another fighting game you think is more popular and competitive, then say why you think it is overall better than the ones I posted.
Please keep it somewhat serious.

Soul Calibur. Not only because it refuses to correct the spelling of its own name, but because I can make my character look like Ronald McDonald, and bludgeon my enemy to death with a frozen squid. Oh wait, serious.

soul calibur has satisfying gameplay, but i never really took it seriously as a fighting game. my friends and i would just mess around most of the time while playing it.
Virtual Fighter i unfortunately haven't played much of it at all :[ i really should, i hear it's great.
the first first fighting game i played was street fighter which i found really cool, but didn't stick in the long run. mainly because i'd only play once in a while when i visited friends who had a super nintendo and at the time (i was like what..in kindergarten?) and fighters were just one of many games, i never invested too much time on any specific game. if i spent more time playing it, or had been exposed to this game when i was older, i'd probably appreciate it a lot more. i play street fighter II now on occasion, but i'm not a hardcore fan like most of my other friends.
my first love was tekken when i visited my friend who had a rad game system called playstation. by then i was probably 7 or 8 years old, so i could actually learn combos and moves instead of mashing, so technically it was my first real fighting game experience. so nostalgia and gameplay both are in favor for me in tekken.
street fighter does seem more of a nostalgia-driven franchise. from what i'm hearing though, the new "Focus Attack" system really appeals to me, since tekken is a different style of play(it's more juggle oriented), so it may balance out my fighting game strategy more xP. so this new street fighter may be another franchise that i could invest a lot of time into.
i'm buying both games :]

I personally enjoy Soul Calibur. This is due to the characher creation and its weapon based fighting system. Though it is still difficult to get into I feel its easier to get into then many other fighting games for better or for worse. This can create lots of new players and fresh blood to contend with veterans online. Soul Calibur has something that makes it and breaks it. That is the abbility for said new players to actively contend with vets. The veteran players use advanced combos but if a new player can get that one strike in to start a spamming combo and beat the veteran. Although this is annoying it almost creates a sort of psuedo balencing within the game between the new players and the old because as the new players play more they learn the combos the veteran players use against them and thus they become veterans themselves.

I'll have to go with Tekken, purely for the fact that it was the game that got me interested in foghtning games . I used to watch my brother play and I always wanted to have a go, one day he let me, and he kicked my ass. But, the way he done it was great, Yoshimitsu destroyed me by disappearing and re-appering behind me then stabbing me in the back. when your young that is awesome. Then as I grew up Tekkens Tag Tournament and 4 came out, which I spent many an hour playing with my friends. I just think Tekken is a game which you can pick, learn the ccontrols, and have a great time playing with friends.

I'll go with Soul Calibur mainly because...that's the only one I've played.

Just curious why the topic got moved because I know it is a debate topic, but the General forum seems to be more for real life topics and not about video games. Since the description of the General forum is, "Anything but video games."

DoA should stick to Beach Volleyball. At least that game was decent and had some appeal to it.

Soul Calibur is clearly the best fighting game around.
The other options just require you to memorize the biggest combo possible, then spam it incessantly.
However Soul Calibur gives you a couple of basic moves and then allows you to string your own combos together on the fly. It's a more skill based game, you have to be good at pre-empting your enemies attacks and blocking accordingly, then retaliating.

I have played SF4, MVC2, Tekken 3 and 5, SC 2 and 3; and I have to say I prefer Tekken.
Street fighter is not a beginner friendly. The combo windows in 4 are just horrible in my opinion. I don't see why it is so complicated to make something a combo in that game. MVC4 was absolutely perfect for me. Sure some unbalancing but it was much easier to play. Want to do a pretty cool looking combo? Press down SP and press buttons. It was pretty damn satisfying. But still the rest of the SF series aren't as easy as that. Also didn't like how HK down is always a knock down move and you can't control when you get up.
I love the Parry system in SC 2 although it is annoying have a parry exchange for like 3 hits. However, I just didn't like what they did in SC3, Character creation isn't that interesting to me in a fighting game. The movesets just were not as intriguing and why would I want to create a character I don't know jack on how to play when I have a good main.
I only played vf once, so I can't really say much. I felt like it was slow.
Tekken is just really user friendly while being pretty deep. I started by playing as hwoarang just mashing x. Now I can do pretty standard juggles while having an amazing wake up game. I like the juggle system in this game. It does look jenky at times when the guys are sidestepping then blocking really fast, but thats only really in pro tournaments when no one wants to get fucked in a juggle.
So, yeah I like tekken. Oh just mentioning, DOA the physics are just so floaty and felt extremely easy to button mash in that game.

hmm seems I am the only Virtua Fighter 5 fan here
you can see why by reading a topic I posted..
Tekken is just a button mashing shit sandwich (sorry but ive had enough of the lagging bullshit they call online... good god..)
Soul Caliber is good and I enjoy it
I like the old Street Fighters better than 4
thats all I have to say.. thats fine if you think im dumb for not liking tekken that much.

I prefer "Tekken" because of the incorporation of the various martial arts styles.
