i didn't think i would like it for some reason so i only rented it to see what the hype was all about. i ended up beating it in 3 days.and enjoying it. i like it how there's a story behind every boss. the gameplay is awesome and the cutscenes are epic. my only regret is that i wish i played the previous metal gear solids so i would now who some of the characters are like meryl for example.but its probaly the game of the year so far

Quick thoughts on the gameplay (I'll reserve my thoughts on the story for another day):
I loved being able to play in such a wide variety of environments because 1) those were all pretty neat locations and 2) it really let you test out the range of Snake's abilities. I played MGS1 and MGS3 and, while I loved those games, the game play got a little redundant since the environments didn't really change all that much. And if the game play did change, it always felt a little forced. But MGS4 really nailed this aspect.
Unlike school, I hated the Crying Wolf battle. It was pretty looking with the snow and the wind (but we've seen this many times in countless Japanese and Japanese-inspired films). Ultimately, all I did was exploit the one glaring AI flaw in all MGS games --- I hid underneath a vehicle. From there, I could snipe Crying Wolf without anyone figuring out where I was. Lame.
Once again, I gotta disagree with school about the last battle --- I LOVED being able to use Snake in a way that actually felt natural. You hear all this bullshit about what a legendary soldier is --- and then you can't jump over a fence. Finally, we got to feel Snake's nimbleness and power.
Also, I loved the flashback-laden Shadow Moses; but I freely admit that's nothing but old dude nostalgia for a simpler time (I was about 16 when I played MGS1).
I am in complete agreement about the lameness of the mini-Gekko. Nuff said on that subject.
My favorite part of the game was actually the mission in Eastern Europe. Not only because it was in such a different setting. It reminds you that Snake actually inhabits a world very much like our own instead of simply being a world full of jungles, deserts, and industrial plants. Plus, I loved how this mission really forced you to be on your stealth game. I mean c'mon school, if you were on your way to a top secret location and stopped by guards who then suddenly fell unconscious, wouldn't you run to try to throw off the person who was OBVIOUSLY following you?
I could say more but this will do. About the story... Suffice it to say that I very much look forward to playing the game a second time --- and skipping every god damn cut scene.

I was asked as an outsider to MGS to write something about MGS4. For the record MGS4 is the first MGS game I ever played except VR missions.
First impressions: +The graphics are very polished +Immersion -32minutes until you get control -confusing beginning -abrupt cutscenes
The first level left me feeling confused about what is to come. I felt pulled in by the war in the beginning and began to feel myself slipping into the beautiful thing that is immersion. Unfortunately it was a case of "So close, yet so far." I was about to get into the game when otacon and his robot give me a slap to the face and make me sit there patiently and watch the pretty slides. After that the game felt kind of sterile for me.
Presentation: +Shiny polish on everything +Top notch voice acting +great HUD -Character models(female)
Not much to say here, the game is very nice looking. I didnt like the main female character models because they were kind of stereotypical beauty and there was nothing left to the imagination with the hot scientist and the grandma which was creepy enough.
Controls: +easy to pick up +responsive
Alot better then the VR missions.
Fun Factor: +shooting is fluid +sneaking is rewarding +essentially an action movie
Replayability: -badges
The badges were a good idea and yet a bad idea. To get the best medal you need to beat the game in under 5 hours on the hardest difficulty with no alarms or kills. I thought 5h would be impossible because my first playthrough took 18h. The thing is that the time includes cutscenes so it brought to my attention the worst thing about the game. There is more cutscenes then there is combat. Don't get me wrong, I love the cut scenes and stuff but I didnt love them enough to waste 13h of my life watching them.
End Game/Conclusion:
I personally thought MGS4 felt incomplete. The ending wrapped up everything soo fast that it left me confused and unable to enjoy it as much as I should. The credits felt like the developers figured out they left something unexplained so they threw those clips in. The final fight was epic though...soo epic I shed a manly tear.
MGS4 was definatly a good game but I believe it left alot to be desired. It didnt help that the game suffered from a ratio of 4h movie to 1h of gameplay.
(like my review?)
