A true Swastika is like Icarus stated it is a Buddhist symbol for Good Luck and is still used, but only if you are a Highest Yoga Tantra Practitioner. I have read that during the 1920-30's Germany had expeditions to Tibet, where they studied the religion and the people. Then they took some quintessential parts of the practice and some very Holy parts and twisted it into evil. Hitler was trying to create a "perfect, pure" society and called it Aryan, in Buddhist terms Arya means Noble, which is one of a Buddha's titles.

The reason why people nowadays feel that the swastika is a symbol of oppression, is because it was adopted by an oppressive facist regime. This completely changed the meaning of the symbol. Yes the symbol is also a decorative Buhdist and Hindu symbol, but not many people realise this, even if people did it would still be seen as the Nazi symbol because thats what it has more recently been used as. You raise a good point though.

It's understandable where your coming from with the fact that the swastikas meaning wasn't suppose to be that of the Nazi's. However, since it played such a huge role in symbolism during World War II that no matter what it'll have negative connotations. I personally think that it will always be a symbol of dark times.

I think that it should be a reminder to those horrible events that happened. I think that people should look at that symbol in a respectful manner. They should realize that those events happened and that pretending that they never did isn't going to help anyone.
