What have you guys thought of Wiiware so far? The interface seems fine; same as the Virtual Console. The only game I can really give first impressions of is Lost Winds, and to show my hand now; BUY IT.
This game is absolutely beautiful. The locations, the sounds, the characters, all are great. The game has a very cartoon, clean simple lines art style that I adore. The sound in this game is awesome. There is a music overtone throughout the game that changes depending on enemy encounters and such. It is a loop though so if you get annoyed by that easily then that might be a bother for you. The wind sounds quite good. Move the cursor at a slow pace and it will sound like a breeze, speed up and it will sound like a gust. The wind effects everything in the environment, the trees, the water, the bushes, rocks, and it all responds quite nicely. Plus when you talk to people it adds a softening filter which looks stunning.
The gameplay is just as good. This game is a platformer at heart. It is in 2.5D for what I would imagine is for the entire game. The wind as a nice element to it, your character is not able to jump so you must use the wind to lift him up. You can perform double jumps and transverse large gaps. The wind is also used for small puzzles, for example, there is a sapling near a waterfall, how to make it grow, splash water on it with the wind. The level design reminds me greatly of that game Brad blogged about in the indie game spotlight. (Sorry I can't find the post or remember the name) The control is very good. It is separated so you control the character with the nunchuck and the wind with the wii remote. The game goes into slow motion when you press the A button to "draw" the wind, so I makes it easy to preform maneuvers . There are enemies but with my short time of playing I have seen nothing really challenging. When you do die you can revive yourself with the wind, but you can only do this if you collect these flying seed like things that come out of the plants. Save points are done via statues. So far Brad I have not seen checkpoints so you might be worried. Remember this is just early impressions for me.
Edit: Finished Lost Winds tonight. Took just under three hours with 19/24 hidden totems. Buy this game for sure. It sets up well for a next game. I just hope there is more of the Phantom Hourglass-esque art in the next. It is downright beautiful.
