Last I heard. I think one piece was top, with katekyo hitman reborn, naruto and bleach coming in well below it. Those were the only series that stood out to me. Have no idea where I saw it though. Sorry.

Yea, one piece is crazy popular in japan for some reason. I've never it though however. I mean its your typical young people cliche action series. I think what sets it apart is its art style and craziness.

Yeah it's just...wacky, it doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think it makes it much easier to watch than Bleach and Naruto, who can be a little heavy handed. It's fun to watch, and Oda's humor is pretty spot on most of the time.

I had no idea One Piece was so popular in Japan, though I don't disagree with it, it's my favorite anime too.

well, most of the anime adapted from a Jump! manga are like wii, with the target audience aimed at a lower age group. only exception would probably be death note. if you are asking the most popular animes amongst the series ones at the moment(ie. the ones that does not go over 50 episodes), then i would say Kannagi and toradora! , but be warned, both are pretty much high school comedy with a decent amount of moe elements.

Death Note wasn't too bad. Hunter X Hunter? Possibly.

I really love One Piece. I think it gives a bad first impression but once you get deep into the anime you learn to love the unique characters, the variety in plots, the overall design, and the cleverly throwing in humor that aims both at older teenagers and younger kids.

That's kind of not true, the system works with multiple target audiences. Shonen JUMP is a Shonen magazine and is aimed at young teen males. Shonen is just an age specification, there are also Seinen aimed at older audiences and Shoujo aimed at young females. There are a few other categories as well but these are the main ones. The same case occurs with anime though they are sometimes toned down if they classify as Seinen for Shounen network broadcasting. Most JUMP series based anime are very popular because JUMP itself is popular, these are essentially run as yearly anime. Examples of this include Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Gintama and Reborn. Basically, new episode every week all year round. Then there are seasonal animes which are often between 12-26 episodes long. These are often ranked slightly differently than the year long ones. Seasonal ranking change to often to keep track (for me at least), about every 6 months. As far the yearly rankings go it is essentially One Piece leading by a decent margin followed by Naruto, Bleach, Reborn and a few others.

I haven't been able to watch One Piece in awhile, but I would say its up there on the top 10 list of currently popular anime. Its true that One Piece can be comical a plentiful times, but at the same time the show can be serious in certain arcs.
Bleach and Naruto are up there as well, hard to believe so much time has passed since all the three mentioned series have started. Whats more amazing is that One Piece has been around since 1997....and the anime started in 1999.... this is quite a long run for a manga/anime.
