I really don't watch any scary movies. Not because I don't like them....but because most of them are terrible. Most don't even scare me. Sure, I jump because they show something unexpected, but nothing is ever on the realm of deliberately terrifying me in any way.
However, The Blair Witch Project scared the hell out of me. I was 9 or so when it came out and was scared to death. I'm sure even if I watched it today I would be a bit frightened. It was what horror movies should aim to be. And I don't mean all hand held...but presentation and execution wise.
I can't stand when they induce gore into a film because they believe that's scary. It isn't. Sure it makes me turn away from the screen, but not because I'm frightened...because is f**king disgusting. Nor can I stand it when they decide they're going to show the 'big bad monster' only for the monster to be some terrible half assed CG tragedy.
I wish filmmakers would realize that sometimes, the scariest things are the things we never know.

The last scary movie for me was the ring 1. But for some reason it doesn't seem to scare me anymore.

Personally, the way people do horror films now days ruins it for me also. Some of the most classic horror movies capitalize on one key fear, which is the fear of the unknown. With CGI laced movies, that fear is now gone. We see, therefore we now have a face to put it on which makes it less scary.
The best film I can think of that genuinely scared me was Jaws. Shark was hardly ever on screen, and it scared the bejeezus out of me. I wish someone would make a movie like that again.

Now that you mention it gemini It also seems like a lot of scary movies are just...mindless gore.
To me saw was not scary the least bit but to see random crap like someones head getting poped off or cutting your foot off, hollywood needs to know its not scary just disgusting.

Thats why i like Blair witch project, the ring, and stuff like that. In Blair witch project, its entirely a mystery, you have no idea of whats happening, or whats out there in the forest, and never do. In the Ring, you don't see like a butt load of dead people and gore, its what it is that is creepy.

One of the scariest for me was Exorcist, couldn't finish that one. Blair Witch Project I finished, but it was no less scary for me. Same goes for Ring (but mostly the Jap. version, the American version I could handle... probably because I'd seen the jap. version already). Also, weird as it might seem to some, was friggin' Kujo. My cousin had a St. Bernard that scared the **** outta me, and that movie didn't help things any.

Cannibal Holocaust isn't banned because it's scary, it's banned because of the mutilation of real-life animals. The movie itself is pretty laughable.
The scariest movies I have seen are probably the Shining and the Exorcist. Runner up goes to the Thing and Ju-on
