Oh and the Halo soundtrack...You guys need to listen to your game music. If anything the Halo theme is one of the most recognized tunes in gaming and that doesn't mean it's terribly good or that its entire soundtrack was amazing. As much as I like the main theme, there are a lot of tracks in the Halo series that are way better than that. Heavy Price Paid, High Charity, Covenant Dance and In Amber Clad all come to mind. And then there's the High Charity Suite (1:38 in particular is my favorite part) Even Halo 3's soundtrack (the weakest in the series IMO) was stronger than a lot of games soundtrack's are

Sorry man, it just sounds generic to me. Breath of Fire 4....It had some funky ass music! I loved it. This soundtrack is a good example of how the game developers and music composers can come together and make a game's setting fit perfectly with the tunes. I have yet to hear anything amazing from today's games sadly. Someday, there will be another Ennio Morricone except he'll be doing music for games! w00t! And im going to toss SS2 here because DnB kicks ass.

How this hasn't been mentioned yet in a discussion about game music surprises me:
Suikoden easily has one of the greatest game scores that I've ever heard.
Also, to address the OP more directly, I can't say a soundtrack really makes a game. But there are many cases where it can really enhance it and Suikoden is one of those games.

Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears. :3 I really like Yasunori Mitsuda's work. I blame my brother.
