Gaming doesn't give job skills as I've recently figured out when filling out my second job application. Sure, I have good reflexes, but that's about it.

I believe that if a person is exposed to something they are sensitive too and easy influenced by, it will affect them. It is up to the person to be able to realize what they can or can't handle. It's like watching R-rated movies, reading violent comics and watching violent shows or anything else. It's also up to parents to make sure their kids don't see certain things they aren't ready for yet.
Some games are helpful with hand-to-eye coordination and some, like brain age, stimulate your mind. Most games don't aim to, however, but playing a video game is more stimulating to the mind than sitting and watching a TV show, unless the show is informative or just causes you to think.

Well I'm going to start out with a genre of games: Strategy. When I think of stratergy a few things pop into my head, such as: plan, think, and the most important, chess. I believe that Strategy games are just virtual chess, a game which, without a doubt, requires intelligence to play and win. In chess you have a very certain circumstances, but in a Strategy game you will end up in situations where you have less of a certain type of pawn than you are regulary used to having. This forces you to adapt with this new situations thus training your mental flexibility. If you want to know what I mean then, if you have a chess set, play chess with one of your friends but take away your Queen, 1 Knight, and 1 Rook while your friend keeps everything and try to beat them. Harder: Yes. Impossible:No.
Now I know that someone may say well that's only the case with Strategy games, but that isn't the case. FPS helps your ability to notice little details, some games help with hand-to-eye coordination, and much more.
Another reason people think that games are killing is because of their influence. Violent games can influence violent behavior, IF the child playing that game is easily influenced by those types of things. The parents should take responsibility over what their kid is playing. But the parent should not be the only one deciding, the child has to know what they can and can't cope with without being influenced.
To sum it all up, "Games don't hurt because of their content, they hurt because of the people playing them."

Violent games don't make me go do things in the real world. And most shooting games make me want to join the army, yet I'm too weak to participate that.. Mostly puzzle games helps my mind. edit wtf i always hated puzzle games who is this kid

Violent games should not be an issue as long as a parent can explain that killing in a video game and in real life are much, much different. Blaming games for these issues is just a parents excuse for bad parenting. On top of that, they help a lot with hand eye coordination and have the ability to help children make good moral choices (Mass Effect, KoTOR, etc.).

Me and my friend have a joke: "If we want to kill someone, we'll find their a**es on Halo." Despite what a lot of parents think (depending on the age of the child), I hardly believe kids go around killing people because they've seen it in a video game. And maybe the child shouldn't be exposed to violent games unless the parent is willing to explain that virtual and real life are two completely different things? Edit: I just kind of quoted the person above me, whoops. Sorry Lux.

I do believe that some games can teach us skills that are usefull in the real world. There's actually a book that supports my view which is called Everything That's Bad Is Good For You. If anyone can have a read of it, do so, its good stuff.

Some people say that games like GTA cause people to go out and do bad things, when in reality staying home and playing games is a lot safer than going out and drinking, or something else. I'm not saying that you should always stay indoors and play games, though. Going outside always trains your body and mind better than video games.

well there are some games out there that are directed to increase brain function. Like brain age and the puzzle games for the DS and also brain academy for the wii. In my opinion, those games are the only ones that will increase brain function. I actually did a test with Brain age and played that game for a month. I started off with the brain age of a 69 year old...and im almost 21..yikes!! and after i used the game for a month i went from a 69yo brain to a 25yo brain...right where i am supposed to be. As were i come to my other point, many people dont really buy the games because they arent challenging or they do not appeal to them (which is a vast majority). I think that video game developers should make more games like brain age and increase brain function for especially kids in the age of 7-15, because when your a kid your brain is developing and if a 7 year old is playing zombie or shooting games all the time, that kid will not have the most best of grades. Im not saying that if they play those certain type of games that they will end up failing classes. Im just saying playing games in moderation ex. 1-2 hours per day, that would also help with brain function. Kids and teens and yes even adults can play games (doesnt matter which type) up to 5 to 10 hours per day!! holy i mean, yes, games are addicting...eg.oblivion, diablo 2, WoW etc, but if you are playing these games non stop, get help. Games today are like a visual drug like Crack and sometimes its hard for some people not to get that visual rush. So all in all it depends on how much you play and which games (which arent alot) are education and increase brain function. I hope this doesnt offend anyone and not get mad. its JUST AN OPINION. and i hope someone agrees with me!!! lol ;D
