When I was younger, some chick named Utada got insanely popular... there was Puffy and L'Arc, some crazy Michael Jackson wannabe TM Revolution, and Hey Hey Hey music champ which aired every Sunday on the local San Francisco Fuji TV station.
That was a while ago... and I've been out of the loop. Has anything changed?

Umm, I don't think I'll be able to answer your question correctly, but here it goes... JPop, just like every other kind of music, constantly changes. New artists break through, old artists break up, etc. Most of the artists you named are pretty mainstream, but then again, all of the artists I know are also mainstream. Japanese music, like other music from other regions, has diversified as well. There are some singers that do love songs and pop songs that go with the traditional JPop adorability, but I've also seen some groups doing rock, or even metal. There are even some groups that do JRap (for lack of a better term known to me). If you really want to find and discover new artists, then you can go here: wiki.theppn.org/Main_Page I don't know if it's the most efficient way to do so, but it works for me.

Utada...do you mean Utada Hikaru? If it is her then yes, she is still very popular. L'arc en ciel is still popular but broke up again recently and the vocalist, Hyde, started a new band named VAMPS. As for TM revolution, he's still popular I guess. He also recently broke up from his band Abringdon Boys and is going solo again.
