Sev sat on the steps of the palace with his head in his hands, trying to ignore the roaring of the airships overhead. The only thoughts that came to him were those of his dead comrades. Everything they’d fought for had been for naught. Everything they’d sacrificed had meant nothing. Sev slowly raised his head to the sky and stared at the ships over head, “Rico, you stupid fuck.”
Killzone 2 Review
I never played the first Killzone, nor Liberation, so I knew nothing of Killzone 2 and thus I wasn’t excited for it. I’d heard about the multiplayer and thought that sounded cool but my decision to buy the game was still on the line. It wasn’t until I got the demo off of the EU PSN store that I decided I wanted KZ2. The demo impressed me so much with how well it looked, how well it played (except for the aiming), and the overall feel of the world. On February 28th, because I had to work the day before, I went to my local GameStop and picked up Killzone 2.
After putting the game into my PS3 and waiting for it to start up I was presented with what I consider one of the best openings in a game. I was instantly sucked into the story and world of KZ2 and was ready to kick some Helghan ass. As I was watching the opening intro I thought the game had started but it wasn’t until I saw the menu that I realized it hadn’t. I wish more games would open like this because it seriously was awesome.
The overall sound in Killzone 2 is good. The weapons sound nice, the voice acting is done well, and the music sets the mood. While I could yammer on about each of these I’m not going to because I feel you all get the point.
Let’s talk about the meat of Killzone 2; combat. I know this is going to sound cliché and tired but I really do hate the aiming mechanics. As Brad describes it you start off going slow as you move your rifle around then go fast. I thought as the game went on I would get used to it but I didn’t. Another thing I had a problem with was, like with F.E.A.R. 2, why do the enemies not die in one shot? I swear regular Helghast soldiers withstood two shots from my shotgun at point blank. The only weapon I found that killed an enemy in one shot was the sniper rifle and with how bad the aiming was for me I didn’t ever use it. I understand if they all died in one shot it wouldn’t be challenging but how can someone survive half a clip from a full automatic rifle and still stand?
Regardless of these complaints I still had fun with the game. Although a lot of the time I was frustrated with a little patience I was able to get past the level. My favorite part of the game was when you get the lightning gun. If I could have played the entire game with that one weapon I wouldn’t give two shits about the aiming. Over all while the aiming sucks and the enemies seem to have uber health it was an enjoyable experience.
THE NEXT PART CONTAINS SPOILERS!
What story there is of Killzone 2 I enjoy but it wasn’t anything extraordinary. The best part about the story was probably the characters themselves. All of the characters have different personalities and I grew to like and hate different ones. When Garza died I felt bad, bad enough that I wanted to make Rico pay. My problem with the story is of course the ending. Like with Prince of Persia (2008) I felt like everything I’d done had been in vain. This of course made me hate Rico even more. I suspect though that if you’re playing Killzone 2 you’re not playing it for the story, you’re probably playing it for the multiplayer.
END SPOILERS!
I don’t have much of a problem with aiming in multiplayer because I like to rush. I mostly fire from the hip and usually do well enough for myself. I also don’t like how you can’t pick a class right from the start. I understand that Guerrilla wants to make you earn it but not everyone has the time to invest in the game to level up. Hell maybe I missed something and you can choose a class without leveling but I never found it. Regardless the multiplayer is solid and is probably the main reason you should buy the game. One thing I really enjoy about the multiplayer is how the game seems to continue to go. Let me explain it a little better. Say you pick Deathmatch, you play until that round is over then without going to a lobby the game continues to the next game mode like Capture the Flag. It makes the multiplayer matches feel like a continues battle.
If you want a good multiplayer FPS on your PS3 then buy Killzone 2. If you’re looking for a good single player experience I’d say rent the game. Multiplayer is where KZ2 shines so keep that in mind if you’re looking into buying it.
I hope you enjoyed the review.
