Alright, so, this one isn't really "Step by Step" because there's really no steps to it. Here is a list of programs that I use, and I feel everyone should use to protect their computers, along with a list of programs to stay away from. The good:Now, stuff you should stay away from. The Bad:[/b] - Norton Anti Virus. Yes, I realize your brand-name computer came with it. Yes, I realize "it gets rid of viruses." But it's also an annoying system hog, whether it's scanning or not. Just trust me, stay away from it.
- Anything advertised on flashy banners. Never click the flashy banners, even with proper protection. Just don't.
Now, go forth and explore the interweb, secure in the knowledge that you're protected!

How to you feel about Kapersky? I have never used it personally, but some of my friends told me it's crap, and I trust them because they're uber-nerds. Exxcept for that part where it misses a lot of stuff, detects non-malicious files as threats and is as bad as Norton when it comes to system memory usage.

I never liked AVG Free. As darknezz said about Avast, it detected a lot of non-malicious files as threats on my computer.
A good program I use that is free is called Spybot Search & Destroy.
Spyware Doctor is also good if you are willing to pay for it (or by other means).

I never liked AVG Free. As darknezz said about Avast, it detected a lot of non-malicious files as threats on my computer. AVG Free is the best freeware antivirus out there, and the only thing I would ever even consider paying for would be PC Cillan from Trendmicro. It's alright, but the anti malware that I suggested in the first post beat it out, hands down. Especially when you factor in that Spybot S&D is annoying, slow and targets things as harmless as cookies. Again, paying for programs is stupid. Also, I do not advocate stealing programs like that.

Is NOD32 equal to AVG Free in any way? I am using that.

I was getting tired with Norton's slowness, so I switched to Kapersky. Let me tell you, I have never seen such a shitty program. It let 102 viruses get on my computer and let itself become infected.
I got my second hard drive working properly, formatted my computer, and installed Norton 2008 again on the non-windows install harddrive. This seemed to drastically decrease my startup times and speed up the AV program itself.
I've heard that Norton 2009 is a lot faster and less of a hog, but I would only recommend it if you have a high end system with a powerful processor and a lot of HD space.
I've read some professional reviews on AVG and heard it was pretty much shit all around, but blocked the big stuff. Don't know anything about the other programs you mentioned.

They, and the claims in your post, didn't come from the Norton website, did they? 'Cause Norton 2k9 is just as bad, if not worse. AVG lets some tiny things slide by, and they're mostly harmless any way. The thing about that, though, is that no program will catch everything, hence the need for the three programs I posted.

I had a Virtumonde and W32/Smitfraud problem and it failed to even remotely alleviate the problem. I agree Spybot S&D can be slow, but it scans for a large variety of different viruses and they have a great support team on the forum too.

SUPERAntispyware is better at getting rid of the big stuff than Spybot, and it's a bit faster, and you can do a full-drive scan.

Professional I mean people who review software/hardware for a living. Um no, I did not get that information from the website, I've heard about from numerous different types of people who know what they are talking about. Personally, I don't have any experience with '09 so I don't know if its true or not. Anyways, so I don't people screaming at me for some reason, I am not siding with any AV program because I haven't tried them all. Google up Hive Five Top 5 Antivirus programs. It should be on lifehacker.com Those are some pretty good antivirus programs that you can use. Personally, AVG is good enough for me. But this just shouldn't be all you need to protect your PC. Every Friday or Saturday, I'd make my computer go through this weekly maintenance process, which goes like this: 1. A thorough scan using AVG (or whatever antivirus you use) + Spybot Search and Destroy 2. Use the Disk Cleanup (Accessible by selecting the properties of your computer's main hard drive) 3. Use CCleaner to clean up unnecessary files 4. Run a disk check. Again, select this in your hard drive's properties. The disk check will be performed when you restart. 5. Defragment. 6. Create System Restore point. Source of this procedure: TweakGuides.com - TweakGuides Tweaking Companion for Windows XP www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.htmlIf you're on Vista, you can find the Vista version on the link. It shouldn't be much different.
