Why excatly is this stuff called mecha musume and ~tans to begin with? I like anime and japanese culture but only certain styles of anime and this is a little too much even for me so I would be interested to know how the hell this got started and the history on it etc.

Mecha musume usually applies to the military hardware and was termed by Humikane Shimada, the guy responsible for a lot of the "professional" and commercial art. The ~tan culture was made pretty famous by the Computer/Operating system humanizations such as XP-tan and Me-tan I think it all started on 2chan or 2ch (original japanese chan boards) They were called "OS-tan", they were the operating system girls. From there, I guess it took off and became a culture. below is a sample of the main OS-tans. There is A LOT more. There's a Linux-tan, Firefox-tan, etc etc.

My favorite so far, is the Su-47, and about Strike Witches and Sky Girls, I watched one episode of each and it was just too much fanservice for me. I know, I'm talking nonsense.
