Dub bashing

i dont think its that people just out right hate english dubs, its more of 1. they aren't used to actually hearing the voice in english. always been in a different language. 2. the voice acting itself is pretty bad. sailor moon for instance has an awful english dub (granted it was geared towards kids and they couldn;t tell the difference between good and bad voice acting)

now i would like to say that the people who do the fan sub work for animes take a lot of liberties with it. trust me, i know some japanese and they do not cuss anywhere near as much as these subbers make you think. theres a lot of words that simply have no direct english translation so they ussually just put in some random cuss word when ussually the word crap fits better. also, in the japanese language, they have different ways of saying words that make them very insulting and just plain hateful. "You" in japanese can be altered to be a very harsh insult but most english subbers change it to just a normal cussing insult. the meaning is kept the same but the true words are different. (sorry for the rant)

anyway, another thing is that some people are like manga hard core fans. they make voices that fit to the characters and if they hear a voice that sounds nothing like what they imagined in their heads, they freak out and bash it like its the worst thing ever. what ive found ussually they do a good job of finding the right voice. when i was reading the the Full metal alchemist manga, i had Ed with a kind of sarcastic tone with the occasional crack in his voice. both the english and jap dubs fit the voice i had created for him perfectly. yet there are times where others voices where so different from what i imagened them to be it was very hard at first to hear it but i still saw how those voices matched and i got used to it.
again, people will take that way to far.

another reason is people just jumping on the band wagen. its comon for the "COOL PEOPLE" to hate dubs so the people who want to think they are "COOL" too will hate dubs too.

however, those people are idiots.

Personally, I watch both dubs and subs. Which one I prefer for which titles though, depends on which I see first. For example, I first saw Tenchi Muyo on Cartoon Network when I was in elementary school, so ever since then I've been attached to the English voices.

On the other hand, I watched Lucky Star with English subs (probably because the entire series isn't out in English yet), so, as much as I love Kari Wahlgren, Michelle Ruff, etc etc, watching it in English would be weird for me.

I personally can't stand anyone saying that ALL English dubs suck, since I think there are quite a lot of dubs that do a fair job (I especially like Gunslinger Girl, Appleseed (the 2004 movie), and FLCL, just to name a few). But I'm sure that there are people out there that would say that these dubs were horrible, they totally missed capturing the feeling of the Japanese voice actors/actresses, blah blah blah. I guess it just depends on your taste, and whatever that may be, I'll respect it as long as you respect mine

I perf to listen to my anime not read everything that go's by the screen. Noting wrong with dubbing you should be happy they even dub it. that means it's a good anime.

Some animes dubs are bad but these days there usually good but people jump on the "dubs suck" bandwagon as if there is something wrong with japanese animes being dubbed with english voice acting. Some people need to realise that they are dubbed for the english viewers who cant speak japanese and not really meant for the people who could watch the origional dubbing. There is nothing wrong with changing some of the words or lines if it makes more sense to the english viewers.

I like to watch both subs and dubs but i dont watch both for one anime, for instance I prefer the trigun, FMA, and Code Geass english dubs because i saw those first on Cartoon Network. Im not going to watch the origional Japenese dubs because like Hamdemon said it would be wierd for me to watch them after watching the english dubs. I on the other hand watch the Naruto Shippuden and Bleach origional subs because i decided to watch those so that i could catch up to the absolute newest episodes that have only aired in Japan.

My advice to people who think they dont like english dubs is try not to watch both the subs and english dubs of single animes, because they are very differant for a reason. Oh and due to the fact that the english dubs are meant for english viewers, they dont really have an obligation to make the voices exactly the same as the japanese dubs.

I found a lot of things lost in Translations, some people forget that there fan dubs meaning not everything is 100%.

Yeah, fan subs can go from good and detailed, to just plain confusing.

I guess it depends on the people working on it, and their grasp of the Japanese (and English) language.

Dubbing isnt the end all with anime. We live in america so having english in a anime isnt bad. I do understand that alot can be lost in the traslation adn sometimes the dubbing is very abd but it isnt bad. I do also think that some animes in the original japanese language but some characters in the original language sound terrible but the same can be said about some american dubbing. For example: GTO- onizuka sounds really odd to me in his kinda weird voice as compaired to teh spike voice that he has in the american dubing. Now, for american dubbing, Naruto sounds like a complete pansy adn in the japanese version sound really awesome. everyone has there own opinions but saying one is completely better than the other is stupid or is a fan boy. i know that alot of people are i guess tryign to be hard core but you are still watching teh same thing and gettign teh same feeling and animation so stop cpmplaining.

For me, it's more of a personal preference. I liked Cowboy Bebop's english dub, but I liked Samurai Champloo's Japanese dub. *shrugs* And Hellsing's dubs are both even to me. So I wish people wouldn't bash english/japanese dubs and just listen to whichever one they prefer.

Yeah, I agree with you. I personally liked the Cowboy Bebop dub as well as Fullmetal Alchemist. There are a few dubs I can tolerate simply because I don't have access to subtitles. Since the first anime I've seen (DBZ, surprised?), I had no idea about how the Japanese version would be so I just stuck with the dub and I enjoyed it. When I heard the Japanese version of DBZ for the first time, I thought the voice acting was... weird.

I think it comes down to which version you hear first. I watched Death Note subtitled and I simply loved the voice acting. I heard the dub and I was dissatisfied. I watched the English version of FMA and I thought it was terrific. I turned over to the japanese version and I found it displeasing. However, I tend to enjoy the original work more than the dub so I try to find a quality subgroup. Ever since I first started watching Naruto, I stopped watching dubs. The best part of watching the Japanese version or in the original language is that you do not have to wait years until it is dubbed and can pretty easily find a decent subgroup to translate it.

Plus, more often than not, the original is usually altered pretty heavily to match the standard for the other country to make it more suitable for all ages to watch. For example, One Piece was great in Japan (I have not seen it, but it had a good reputation) and it was heavily edited by 4Kids. Initial D is one of my favorite animes as of now and the english version was EXTREMELY altered and it was almost intolerable to watch compared to the flawlessness of the original.
