Echo Night Beyond (ps2) [This isn't a first person shooter, it's a First person puzzle/strategy/horror game]
I know there are people that have not played this game and are interested in it.
I've read some horrible reviews on this and I must say this is not a Resident Evil, F.E.A.R., Fatal Frame, Silent Hill ect...Game!
This game is kinda like ICO and SotC except you're in space and there is a fear factor.
Everyone that is gun hoe on shooting things will probably not like this game basically because THERE ARE NO WEAPONS! People don't like to run away usually but that's what you do during the game. This is not an ordinary game.
Story
It is 2044 - You (Richard Osmond) and your beloved soon to be wife(Claudia) are heading to the moon on a shuttle to get married. Unfortunately for the both of you the shuttle you are on encounters a supernatural phenomenon and crash lands on the moon. You then awaken to find that you're the only one living on the shuttle but believe that your lover is still alive some place on the station. Your job as Richard Osmond himself is to gather clues on Claudia's whereabouts, explore the station and free the restless spirits in space and live.
Graphics, Sound and Music
The graphics are pretty amazing. The graphics give you a freaky clostrophobic feeling from time to time since some of the rooms and hallways are kinda small and narrow.
There are areas where you'll be shoved into a tight compact spot and you have to wait until you can nudge free.
As for music there isn't a whole lot of music in this game. There are 4 different versions of the one song that you hear twice during gameplay that you can listen to after each ending.
Some people have complained about the voice portion of the game. Yes, some of the characters mumble and are hard to
understand but that's why subtitles are there usually during convo making. I've played this game three times and each time I
found something a bit different. For instance the commander didn't say anything until the end when I started to play this game
for the first time but as of my third time I can hear him calling out to one of his members every once in awhile out in space
during the game play.
Game Play
Before you can play you MUST have an analog controller otherwise you won't be able to play. Why do you need an analog
controller and why can you not get past the menu screen? Because there is a fear feeling factor on this game that you must feel in order to get the full experience of this game.
The developers wanted the gamer to actually feel what the character is feeling which is fear. The fear factor is the heartbeat of your character.
Fog Factor - In the beginning you are warned of the fog. The fog is what makes the ghosts you encounter violent. In order to get rid of the fog you have to find a ventilation system in that area. It's the only way to calm the spirit down.
Now to explain the fear/Heartbeat factor- Your heart beat/Fear Factor is measured by an EKG Readout. Usually your EKG reads 74-75 which is great, if its above 139 then you need to find a way out before it exceeds 300. If it gets to 300 you're dead. You will know when it's not safe by both listening, watching and feeling.
You're pretty much exploring the space station and the moon (at times) for valuable items that belong to other people. There are no weapons and there are a few nasty ghosts that do get in your way from time to time.
As for the controls, dur... my only complaint is the action button (x) fore the ladder always made me mad because you actually had to position yourself a certain way in order to get down or go up.
Monitors -
The only safe place through the first half of the game is the monitor room.
Each monitor room has a save point and a computer in which you can check the camera's for information regarding the crash, crew and the visitors in areas surrounding that room.
Enemies
The wonderful spirits you get to encounter.
You have your violent spirits and then you have your friendly spirits.
Violent spirits are ghosts that have been consumed by the fog. They can either run up to you and laugh, reach out for you, throw themselves at you. And pretty much follow you from room to room even if there isn't any fog in that room. These are the ones you need to take care of before they kill you. I forgot to mention you can't walk or run through them like the spirits in fatal frame. You have to run in the opposite direction the ghost is in or you'll die.
Semi Friendly Spirits are ghosts that you have freed from the fog or ghosts that ask you for favors. Some are nice and some are just plain rude.
Bonus's
There are four endings (two good and two bad. Actually they're all bad in how they end but I won't spoil them for you.)
The last two endings (three and four) require that you grab the last key that goes to the bottom floor, I believe the basement is
what the floor is called.
I don't know if this belongs in the review section or not. But I've been asked about this game and thought I post my thoughts and explain the game. So for those of you that are interested I hope this helps somewhat.
